THE INVISIBLE UNKNOWN
The Hermetic Law of Correspondence proclaims that all things –even polar opposites - are interconnected - spiritual and physical realms, things seen and unseen, as well as occurrences rational or intuitively sensed. More specifically, it states: “as above, so below; as below, so above.”
In my work, The Invisible Unknown, I seek to personify these relationships, reflecting my life-long fascination with goddess mythology, religious signs and practices, alchemy and mysticism, illuminated manuscripts and the universal language of archetypes.
I transform insects, birds and invented creatures into my own scheme of iconography, blending science with spirit to represent primal sources and the energies of the earth. My shamans, mystics and divinities are intended as teachers, guides and protectors, honoring the essence expressed through the animals and plants, and leading us on imagined journeys of magical inventiveness deep into the realm of the rhythms and patterns of Gaia, Mother Earth.

DOWN TO EARTH, Stonehill College, Calo Gallery, 2015
In the series. "Vegetable Goddesses", the enigmatic women I have created are adorned with vegetables festooning their ordinary features, thereby becoming more ornate and regal. These women recall the expression, “you are what you eat”, referencing how healthy our bodies (and souls) might be if we better nourished ourselves. My goddesses also intend to remind us that we are physically a part of the earth; that when we nurture the environment, we nurture ourselves.

In the catalogue from the Stonhill College exhibit, "DOWN TO EARTH", student curator Aiden Farrell writes, Maryjean Viano Crowe marvels that, "Mother Nature continues to forgive us. While her artwork as a whole draws attention to a much neglected relationship with the environment, both the artist and her work demonstrate that a harmonious and healthy relationship with nature is possible, and vital."
